          Joey Continued

This is a letter written by my husband

          Joey

I am not writing this to tell you how well loved Joey was. Nor to say how much he will be missed. I only knew Joey a few short years, but in that time I learned that God created a special human being. I am writing in response to the E-mail messages to my Wifes page about laws requiring helmets. I am 52 yrs.old, I am a Vietnam Veteran. I know death intimatly, friends have died in my arms. Their deaths could not be prevented. Perhaps some lives can be saved here.

Some people wrote to say they don't want government intervention concerning laws to wear helmets. Thats ok, but think about this, would you like the people you care about standing in an intensive care unit crying over your brain dead body? Wondering, if your loved ones had to discuss to pull the plug on your breathing tube. Think about it.

Adults have a choice to kill themselves, children don't or shouldn't have. If you are a parent do you want to be in an ICU watching your child die because he didn't wear a helmet. All because a helmet costs $15.00.

Every day I see children bike riding, skateboarding, roller blading, all without a HELMET. Is it worth it, not wearing a helmet?

Is it better in an INTENSIVE CARE UNIT? I can't speak for you, but my family is worth keeping around, a $ 15.00 helmet is a small price to pay to have a child or an adult at the dinner table that wouldn't be there had they not been wearing a helmet in an accident.

Joeys doctor told us if he had been wearing a helmut, he would have probably only suffered a broken elbow, Imagine, only a broken elbow.

According to the police report, the driver of the car that hit Joey was not speeding, he was not charged with any wrong doing. NY state laws says that pedestrians and bicyclists have the right-of-way, how many drivers remember this? Laws work both ways. You can agree or disagree, but please don't tell me you have the right to kill yourself. I have seen people die for nothing, if I knew you wanted to die I would ask the Supreme Being ( the source of All )to take you in their place then the people I loved would be here.

Yes we all have a choice, I would love to hear your reason for not wearing a helmet. Is it a good one? Is it worth it? Parents, I see your kids bicycling, skateboarding every day.....no helmets, no knee pads, no elbow pads...........why?

Joey was in the ICU for two weeks, we went there everyday to see him. He did not see us.....the tubes draining his brain, the breathing tubes, the IV's, I think were to much for him, he never regained concienence.

Joey was in ICU for two weeks before it was decided by his Mom, sister and brother and other family members to consult the ethics committee to pull the plug on his life sustaining machines. The pain and anger I and his family went through will never be forgotten.
ALL FOR NOT WEARING A HELMET........... Yes we are responsible too, we just never thought that this could happen, we just never thought. If you have children or a child, can you concieve of him or her or them, not being at the breakfast table, dinner table, because they are in a hospital Intensive Care Unit? Just this morning they went to ride their bike, an accident happens Suddenly, a phone call, your child in the local hospital.........brain trauma and a broken elbow.

The Doctor says I am sorry to inform you...................................... your (son, daughter) is brain dead......maybe they will recover, but there is not much hope. we have to leave him or her on medication and see what happens.

Is a helmet that expensive? Is your child worth it?........is your loved one worth it?

I only wish Joey was back in my life. I wish I had told him to wear a helmet, if he had he would have had a broken elbow. Joey, if you had a broken elbow you could still go fishing with your cousin Anthony, you could still have barbecue, you could be at the beach now.

Are helmet laws necessary? Not if we have responsible parents and loved ones that care about us........ Too bad most adults disregard their own safety. Children don't have that option. Parents are responsible for their children, would you rather have them at the dinner table? Or in an ICU?

HAVE YOUR CHILDREN WEAR A HELMET

EVEN IF YOU ARE STUPID NOT TO P.S. I bought a helmetI'm not stupidI want to live and I won't put my future in some one else's hands. A driver of a car who doesn't see me?

          This is from Nanny

I miss Joey soo much! Every other weekend I used to see him.John, his older brother would pick him up.He would go from John's apt. to mine all day.One time he put his feet on my table and, when I told him to take them off,he said you are a pain in the ass nanny. He used to go on a tractor trailer with my soninlaw sometimes. That was his favorite thing to do. His uncle Mike loves and misses him so much. I wish where he lived they had forced him to where a helmet. I see kids on my block all the time riding bikes ,skateboards and roller blades with no helmet. If only they could have seen my grandson.I had high hopes for a while when he was in the hospital.I thought a miracle was going to happen.I did not want to believe things were really that bad. I had everyone praying for him!!He tried to live, but God needed him more than we did!!! I love and miss you Joey
          Love, Nanny

This next letter is from Joey's little cousin, Brittney, who is 8 years old.

I really miss Joe.I miss him so so much!! I don't know why he had to die,but I love him very, very much.He is still in my memories. We used to fool around with each other and have fun.I would tell him put on your helmet, but he would not put it on.Everybody is so sad that he died. Everybody was praying for a life for him but it did not work. He had over 500 wrestling dolls .I got one of them to keep and look at it everyday. I really miss him a lot
          I love you Joey xoxoxoxxo
